Following from our gear guide, here are our top five recommendations for skis you should be glad to be riding in any heli-skiing situation.
Salomon Rocker 2
Our go-to ski for when the conditions are just right here when heli skiing in BC. The Rocker 2 is Salmon’s newest powder ski, and is billed as the most fun and ‘surfy’ yet. Not just capable of handling the powder, with regular camber underfoot and a short, classic sidecut, these skis will not fail you even if the conditions get a little more variable. Honeycomb technology in the tips and tails keeps overall weight down, and also allows for easier pivoting. Sending those powder butters has never been as easy, or so much fun.
Armada JJ’s
On par with the Salomon’s, the Armada JJ’s also rip in any conditions, from deep powder to choppy crud. The patented EST Freeride Rocker keeps the skis super stable, thanks to the rocker at each end, and the positive camber underfoot. The ultralight core parallels the Rocker’s Honeycomb technology, keeping the weight and balance of these all mountain beasts in tune.
K2 Apache Coomba
Here at Last frontier we also have a selection of K2 Apache Coomba’s for you to take out on the mountain. Created with the help of the late Doug Coombs, legendary skier – and appropriately, also a pioneering heli-guide – you know you’re on the right track with these skis. The wide waist and ‘torsion box construction’ make these the powder skis of choice for many. The balanced flex pattern, progressive sidecut and elastomeric core deal with any other conditions you can through at them.
Atomic Bent Chetler
A high performance ski, designed by a high performance athlete. In keeping with all the skis in this list, traditional camber underfoot, and rocker in the ends, keeps these planks effortlessly gliding above the surface of the snow, whilst having no problem on the groomers or hardpack. New upgrades for this season’s models include an additional 25% stiffness in the tails and a brand new design, again by the man himself, Chris Benchetler.
Rossignol S7
Effortless steering and instant speed control are perhaps the two fist things you’ll notice about these multi-award winning skis from Rossignol. The S7 is now an established member of the powder ski rocker revolution, and will continue to make skiing more fun and enjoyable for all. Primarily directed towards the expert skier who likes to take lines head on, intermediates will also soon see the benefits of additional maneuverability thanks to Rossignol’s ‘Powder Turn Rocker’, 50% low camber underfoot, and 50% high rocker in the tip and tails.
