2014 Season Recap at Last Frontier Heliskiing

April 23, 2014 D'Arcy McLeish

It was another awesome season at Last Frontier Heliskiing. Operations at Bell 2 Lodge finally shut down this past Friday [Ripley Creek shut down one week earlier] and we’re now heading into summer after what was our busiest year in our 20 years of operation.

It was a tough year for skiing in BC and we too had our challenges. But even with winter’s tardy arrival and a slightly lower snow year, our average base at 1000 metres was still 300 cm and the mountains of Northern BC managed to dump almost 850 cm of pow on our tenure. Not bad, considering some ski resorts had trouble even opening this year.

On a lower snow year, the size and scope of our tenure really distinguishes us from other operations. No snow for a week? No worries, we just fly a little deeper and search a little harder. Where smaller tenures will get skied out in a week or two, we have over 9,000 square kilometres of terrain to choose from so there are always fresh turns to be had. Our guides, who are some of the best in the business and return year after year, know the tenure well and are constantly scoping new lines for our guests. One of the great bonuses of that massive tenure is exploring new lines and getting first descents. Nothing caps off a heliski vacation quite like getting to name a new run!

This season saw interior renovations at Bell 2 Lodge and a new boot room and gift shop at our Ripley Creek location. All were well received from our guests. We are continually striving to make one of the premier heliski destinations in the world better and this coming summer will be no different. After a few weeks off, we will be hard at work over the next few months at both our locations getting things ready for next year. And next year looks like it might be epic; with a stronger than average El Nino brewing in the pacific, some long term weather models are predicting a huge season.

So enjoy the summer but keep your ski stoke and your snorkel ready. Soon the seasons will change and snow will again start to fall in Northern BC. Pick your week and come heliskiing. Maybe you’ll get to name a run, but for sure you’ll get to ski in some of the most remote and beautiful mountains on earth.

For now enjoy the following photo slideshow from our 2014 heliski season.
