Heliskiing Travel: Getting your equipment safely to the mountains

There’s one thing that can put an end to your heli skiing vacation quicker than anything else, even before you’ve reached your heli skiing destination. It’s losing your baggage; and everyone must have had the same thought once in his or her lives. Waiting for your luggage to appear at the airport, only to have an uneasy feeling that someone may have forgotten to put it on the plane! Maybe it arrives a few days later, but when heli skiing BC, everyday counts. So take a few of our tips into mind next time your planning your journey to northern BC.

Before you fly

The regulations and rules regarding what you can and can’t take on planes are in a constant state of flux. Before you depart, in fact, whilst you are booking, check the current allowances. All airlines differ, as do each country, when it comes to baggage allowance and overweight luggage. Huge fees will incur if you’re dramatically over the specified luggage weight restrictions. Most sports equipment also needs to be booked separately.

If the worst-case scenario actually happens, and you are left without your bags at the other end of a 6-hour flight, then it will help tremendously if they’ve been tagged. Important information that will bring your gear back to you faster includes the dates and destination of where you are headed. Many people wisely put their home address, and perhaps email, on the luggage. Whilst this might prevent you ultimately losing your bags for good, you really want them to join you for your holiday, not be waiting, unused at home.

Alternatives

So what are the best alternatives and benefits of not taking your gear on the flight with you? First off, traveling lighter will be much more pleasurable. And if you choose to use a shipping company you will be safe in the knowledge your baggage will be waiting at your destination ahead of you. Plan for this method of transporting gear well ahead of time. It may take several days for your bags to arrive after booking them due to shipping and customs having to clear them.

Another, cheaper, lighter, and actually sometimes hugely beneficial method is to leaves the skis at home. Instead take your boots and use the chance to demo some top-notch equipment for free. Maybe you haven’t upgraded your old skis for a few seasons. Or maybe you just prefer a change. Whatever the reason is, you will be safe in the knowledge that we have a wide selection of some great skis here at Last Frontier that will suit all levels and abilities, no matter your gender or skiing background. Leaving big, obtrusive board or ski bags at home will not only save on additional shipping or extra luggage fees, but also leave you feeling a lot freer throughout your stay. The only problem we can foresee in this scenario is the not unlikely prospect of you falling madly in love with your new demo skis, being unable to go back to your ones at home. If this does happen to be the case, then all we can say is it’s probably time for an upgrade.
