Often Overlooked – Heli Ski Socks

However much time and effort you may spend on getting the perfectly fitted ski boot, none of that will matter if you scrimp on your socks.  A badly fitting pair of socks will ruin any chances you have of enjoying that perfect heli ski holiday.  A bad sock selection will cause sagging, and tend to wrinkle, quickly leading to blisters, crimps and a hellish heli ski holiday.  Easily avoided, treat your feet; don’t be afraid to splash out a little extra, especially after spending a lot on boots.

That ‘little extra’ won’t come to much either.  Typically, cheap ski socks can be found from around $10, but for an extra $5 or more and you will begin to notice the difference.  The $20 mark is going to provide you with some superbly fitting socks that should last you a good many seasons.  Getting above this price range and we see extra-thin examples tended more towards high-end ski racers.

Many people are surprised to find out how thin modern ski socks are.  Gone are the days when ski socks were designed to keep your feet toasty.  Nowadays the padding and insulation in the boots provide this necessity, while your sock should just concentrate on keeping your feet dry, and providing some extra cushioning.  Padding in the front of the shins will help with comfort, whilst stretchy fabrics around the heels and insteps reduce bulk.  Spending that little bit extra will get you contoured socks.  These socks, with designated feet, are designed to fit well around the toe area and remove the excess material that would otherwise form around the little toes.

As with boots, ski socks come in different shapes and sizes.  Altogether this is a good thing, as we’re all too aware of our own abnormalities when it comes to feet!  Try them on if possible, or at least take a look at some sizing guides.  Use your ski boot for an indication of size, but again beware of manufacturers differences.  Get socks that are too tight and risk decreased circulation and cold feet.  Get them too big and prepare for blisters.  Around the toes is the most important area, but make sure the socks also cover more of your leg than the ski boots do.  Any lower and they will ride down, shortly to put an end to what should have been an epic day of heli skiing.

Popular ski socks are commonly constructed from a blend of materials.  Merino wool or silk is combined with synthetic fibers that wick moisture (sweat) away from the skin, keeping feet dry all day long, and stretching for that snug fit.  To keep your socks in top condition, and your skiing buddies happy, wash them inside out to remove nasty odors, dead skin cells, and dirt that easily will build up throughout the day.  Similarly, dry them out cautiously.  Commercial dryers are often too hot and will damage the complex materials.  Pre-dry in a home machine, and then finish them at room temperature.
