If there’s one thing that’s in plentiful supply this time of year, it’s ski movie trailers. After a busy season of filming during the 2014/15 winter, film crews from around the world have been slaving away in editing caves for their Fall premieres.
The most prominent Fall showing is at the International Freeski Film Festival (IF3), which has its main event in Montreal every September before hitting the road to Whistler, Amsterdam, London and Le Massif.
Here are some of the highlights.

For Lack of Better – Clayton Vila/TGR
Urban skiing has long suffered the stigma as groups of baggy-clothed ski bums getting up to no good on stair rails and other concrete features in the middle of the night. Rather than just being a simple collection of rad segments, filmmaker Clayton Vila has created a documentary following the lives of professional street skiers. These guys take some of the biggest hits when attempting tricks that push the envelope, as well as dealing with complex urban environments and interference from law enforcement. You don’t need to be a jibber to enjoy this film.

In Search – Kye Petersen/Inspired Media Concepts
Kye Petersen has grown up around ski movies, having starred in more than 15 films at the age of just 25 including the documentary The Edge of Never, which centered on him skiing the line in Chamonix that killed his father, legendary extreme skier Trevor Petersen. In Search is his first personal project as director and producer, following adventures through ultra-steep couloirs, vast pillow fields and big Alaskan lines.

Passenger – Legs of Steel
the Legs of Steel crew have spent the last two seasons gathering footage for their 60-minute feature Passenger, spanning four continents with some of Europe’s most talented freeski athletes. The end product is a mix of urban, big mountain and backcountry freestyle goodness, all filmed in lustrous 4K. These boys are giving Matchstick Prductions and TGR a run for their money.

Salomon Freeski TV Season 9 – Switchback Entertainment
Mike Douglas’ crew of dedicated filmmakers and athletes are back again with the fruits of their 2014/15 season labour, this year making the switch from a series of bit-size episodes to larger, more in-depth stories. Adventures take the crew from Japan to Northern BC, Chamonix to Sweden with a special expedition to Svalbard, Norway following photographer Reuben Krabbe’s dream to shoot a skier in front of a solar eclipse.

The North Face: Degrees North

The North Face Team presents a journey North, with big mountain snowboarder Xavier De Le Rue and skier Sam Anthamatten. From using a motorized paraglider to access remote lines to new camera angles, this trailer will make you want to travel North of everywhere you may be and ski hard.
