Heli Skiing in Spring

If someone had to ask us here at Last Frontier what time of year is the most fun heli skiing, we would undoubtedly say springtime. Trading in those endless powder filled mid-winter days is difficult, but when it comes to pure fun in the northern BC Mountains then springtime rules.

Although the chances of getting waist-deep powder in April are lower when compared with January, we love the springtime for its unexpected, surprise dumps. Some of the best heli skiing can come from being given a bluebird day with a foot or two of fresh when you least expect it. Convective showers cause these `unexpected` dumps – the daytime heat puts moisture back in the atmosphere which duly falls again as snow overnight. So you can wake up, after going to bed without a cloud in the sky, to blue skies and heavenly powder.

Whilst lunches never normally feature highly in people’s expectations from heli skiing, springtime lunches are as relaxed and enjoyable as the actual skiing. Compared to mid winter, where we’re all trying to eat as quickly as we can to prevent frostbite setting in, lunch in spring is one of the highlights of the day. With our Vertical Drop Guarantee, you won’t be worried about missing skiing you’ve paid for, and can therefore concentrate on maximizing your relaxing break, high in the mountains.

Trust us that when we say the mountains look most beautiful in spring. Whatever you do, don’t forget to bring your camera to capture the glorious surroundings that you’ll be in the heart of. Some of these peaks see hardly any sunlight throughout mid winter, and so when the sun first hits them in the spring, they positively glow.

And for those who like to go fast, spring is the time to shred. The bigger features start to open up around this time, allowing for longer and steeper descents, with plenty of run out room. With less powder you’ll be more inclined to open up and less worried about trying to get face shots every turn.

As the weather begins to stabilize, higher alpine regions – which were previously inaccessible – let us into their heights. Often we will be able to get up to or very close to some of our favorite summits, allowing for leg burning descents right down to the valley floor.
