Eat Like a Caveman, Feel Like a King?

Nothing says the start of summer like a new diet trend. This year is no exception. But instead of something new and modern to get you looking good in your bikini, this year’s trend is based on eating habits from some 65 million years ago. This blogger is diving deep into this diet to give you skinny and to find out if it really is anything new or just a repeat and repackage of what we have heard before.

The Paleo diet wants you to ask these guys the important question, “What’s for dinner?”

Introducing the Paleo diet. Based on foods that mimic the meals of our pre-agricultural, hunter-gatherer ancestors, the goal of the diet is to aid your health, reduce the risk of disease and most importantly (and just in time for beach season) loose weight.

By focusing on pre agricultural time, grains and starchy veg are gone. They are replaced by low GI vegetable options that are slowly digested and decreased your blood sugar spikes. Fiber and vitamins are also increase from your increased consumption of veggies. Salt and other preservatives are reduced as you eat food in its most simple state (like the caveman’s did).

And considering you are now a hunter, your proteins are also increased from the average 15% of your diet to 35% (extra point if you hunt your own dinner and therefore burn calories)

If you are similar to this blogger and run in health minded circles, it won’t be hard to find someone you know of this diet. And like all diet trends there are those that swear by it and those who are not seeing the results they were promised.

And while environmental props should be given to the diet’s preference of grass fed and organic meat, I am still left scratching my head. For starters, we do not live the same lifestyle as our caveman ancestors. We are not running from predators and we are not hunting for our food.

We are sitting at desks. We are driving cars. We watch TV.

Eating that much fat and meat is a lot of calories for this type of lifestyle. Is that not obvious to people? Am I taking crazy pills?

And is far as eating more vegetables are concerned, is that really new information?

Call me simple, but what about the concept about listening to your body and not overdoing any of the food groups?

The verdict? I am sorry to say Paleo crew, it doesn’t take much examination to say your menu plan isn’t new and you have been the victim of another fad diet with clever marketing.
