The Advantages Of Having Such A Gigantic Tenure

When it comes to talking about the size of our terrain, we don’t mince words. Simply put, Last Frontier has got the largest single heli ski area on the planet. With 9,500 km² (2.2 million acres) of mountain playground at our disposal, no other backyard comes close. But, other than superlative bragging rights, what are the advantages of having such a gigantic tenure?

First and foremost, size matters because the more terrain you have to work with, the more diverse a program you are able to offer. Our tenure includes plenty of tight trees, wide open alpine bowls and everything in between, which makes getting after the steep and deep in a variety of settings and scenarios is as easy as it gets. Cruise mellow slopes, drop pillow lines or crush an epic run with 2,000 m of vertical drop. We’ve got it all, and then some.

From an operational standpoint, having a massive tenure is also a bonus due to the options it affords when weather and snow stability inevitably throw a curve ball into the mix. Mother Nature can be fickle but, thankfully, we’ve got lots of wiggle room in which to be creative. When the alpine is out of bounds due to poor flying conditions or extreme avalanche risk, we keep it on the down low, dropping into any number of gorgeous tree line runs where the snow lays protected from the elements. With endless options in terms of terrain, we’re able to avoid less desirable conditions and stick to dream lines in the world-class powder we know and love.

Many of our guests make Last Frontier an annual event, coming back to ski with us every winter. One of the reasons for which we have such a strong rate of retention has to do with the size of our tenure. Guests know they won’t be skiing the same runs in the same area day in and day out, year after year, especially given that we have two completely separate lodges, each with their own unique style and terrain. Ski one year from the Coast Mountains of Ripley Creek, the next year from Bell 2 in the legendary Skeena Mountains, then book a Lodge 2 Lodge Safari, sharing 7 days between the two. When each trip is a little bit different yet equally incredible as the last, it never gets old!

Even our guides appreciate skiing within such a vast tenure. Colin Moorhead, Lead Guide & Assistant Operations Manager at Ripley Creek, loves the massive and remote operating area at Last Frontier Heliskiing for obvious reasons. “I am still skiing new lines and new runs every season,” he says. “There are more than several lifetimes worth of ski terrain up here.” Even a corner office with the best view in town can’t beat this work environment.
