Heli Skiing Company Profile – Teton Gravity Research

Four friends with a passion for the sea and mountains, and all the action sports these natural venues can host, began Teton Gravity Research (TGR) in 1995. From films of heli skiing big lines in Alaska to a fresh look at what faces the surf world today, TGR’s vision was to showcase the athletes’ perspective of these action sports. The four friends, Steve Jones, Todd Jones, Corey Gavitt and Dirk Collins, also shared a belief that the youth and progressions within the sports should also be at the forefront of their products. With money made from commercial fishing in Alaska, this is what they set out to achieve.

These days, when it comes to action sports, TGR is one of the fastest growing brands out there. Perhaps most known for their award winning feature length films, of which they now total 28, Teton Gravity Research has also produced many television series for a number of different networks. These include Showtime, NBC, Fox Sports and Fuel TV. Combined with a stylish and modern clothing line, and their cutting edge media presence, TGR has all the bases covered. Their films include extreme athletes at the top of their game – Jeremy Jones, Ian Walsh, Sage Cattabriga-Alosa and Seth Morrison all feature. Pushing the limits and creativities of ski, snowboard and surf films, if you haven’t seen one yet, now is the time!

TGR also recognizes that the places we love to play in may not be around forever unless we look after them. Both the mountains and the ocean are heavily affected by climate change, pollution and overdevelopment caused by us – and without these we would no longer be able to participate in the sports we love. The company is a member of the group called ‘1 Percent for the Planet’ – a global movement of companies donating at least 1% of their annual net revenues to environmental organizations worldwide. It also strives to use environmentally minded materials and keep trying to preserve these amazing playgrounds we have around us. From 2008, all its hoodies and t-shirts have been produced using organic and recycled polyester materials.

On the filming side of things they are also promoting going green. Generating awareness and incorporating environmental issues is one thing; TGR has gone a step further and have also become the first action sports film company to go carbon neutral, offsetting the carbon footprint by logging all the use of snowmobiles, helicopters, cars and planes. Looking at the action sport industry from a philosophical point of view they like to leave us mulling over this quote – ”Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world…”
