4 Luxury Heli Skiing Gadgets for your next Heliski Trip

Packing for your heli-ski trip in northern BC should be a pain free process. It should even help build the excitement… After the obvious, vital pieces of gear have been checked and bagged; skis, ski boots, clothing etc, you may find room left over for some not so essential, but definitely worthy, technological extras. Here is a list of 4 luxury gadgets you may consider bringing on your next helicopter skiing outing.

GoPro
We have already documented the rise and rise of the extreme, high-definition video camera, and you may already own one. Setting the standard with the newest model, the GoPro HD Hero 2, you’ll be able to capture some unforgettable moments. And with its unbelievable small size and weight, it will easily slip into your luggage leaving more room for other tech extras.

Mp3 player
Not everyone likes to listen to music whilst riding or skiing, in fact it can often be quite dangerous to do so in extreme mountain conditions. The cracking sound moments before an avalanche may give a rider just that bit of a head start to escape into the safe zone, otherwise missed if you’ve tunes blaring. That said, getting psyched on the heli ride up listening to your favorite band, is all part of the fun of it and we’re all for it. Also, hear that song again in another setting, and your instantly transported back to the top of the mountain, an awesome lifelong reminder of your trip.

GPS device
Many types of GPS device are available nowadays, and some are even set up towards skiing. Recording every ascent, descent, as well as speed and altitude, these are great for people who want a physical output of their days heliskiing. Small and easy to transport, they will fit into any pack or pocket with no problem. Alternatively, look into getting one as an application for your Smartphone for a fraction of the price.

Spare goggles / lenses or “gadget” goggles
We wouldn’t actually class this last item as an essential gadget (apart from the Zeal Optics’ goggles mentioned below), more as essential gear, but we think it’s so essential that we have added it anyway. Losing your vision through foggy, steamed up or snow-filled goggles will easily ruin your day quicker than almost anything else. Prepare for the odd tumble, and pack a spare pair of goggles. As a luxury, we recommend you also sort yourself out with a number of lenses for different light conditions. If you’re tight on space and weight, and a bit of a gadget freak, how about combining some of the items on this list and go for a pair of “gadget” goggles. With a built in GPS heads-up display, or HD video camera, such as with Zeal Optics’ iON and Transcend goggles, you’ll find yourself the center of attention throughout the trip.
