February 2019 Heli Skiing Conditions Update

February 26, 2019 Steve Rosset

We are approaching the mid-season mark of our 2019 heli skiing season. Days are getting longer and our eager guests are racking up the vertical under clear blue skies. We are in the midst of another high pressure system and it looks like clear skies will stretch into early next week before we get a snow reset. Check the latest forecast.

Bluebird Days Galore

February started out with a big storm system, but the clouds quickly parted to reveal a long stretch of clear skies. 10 days is a long time without snow, but with over 10,100 square kilometers of terrain, we had no struggle to find the goods. Our guides are well versed with the unique topography of our heliski area and had finding preserved powder is in their blood. With only 4 guests per group and 12 per helicopter, it’s easy to maneuver into new terrain.

The Storm Reset

Then came the snow. Up to 60 cm of fresh storm snow and it made for some of the best heli skiing this season. Currently we are benefiting from a stable snowpack, which is allowing us to ski more aggressive lines in bigger terrain. As we speak, our guests are on their fourth 10,000 vertical meter ski days at both locations. Strong skiers & riders, great snow and beautiful weather have us skiing long days.

At 1,000 meters in elevation are currently sitting around 200 cm of snowbase at bell 2 Lodge and 260 cm at Ripley Creek. This is about average for this time of the year and it’s getting us skiing deep down into valley bottoms. Recent heliski tours have seen us venture far into our tenure. We’ve added yet a few more runs to the over 1,000 that are already marked on our maps. There’s really nothing like experiencing a first decent in an area that’s been skied for over 24 years.

With a considerably above average number of clear days this season, we are fortunate to have such a vast and versatile heli skiing tenure to exploit. Stay tuned for our March update in a few weeks. Oh and if you still have the desire to get out skiing or riding with us this winter, we do have a select few peak season seats still available. Inquire here.
