5 Favorite Après Heli Ski Drinks
We may be known for our extensive ski area and excellent guides here at Last Frontier, but we’d just like to let it be known we know how to relax in style too! So we thought we’d take the opportunity to share with you a few classic après drinks that you may catch us sipping on after a long day rippin’ in the powder.
Hot Toddy
Let’s kick things off with the classic hot toddy. Once believed as the answer to a sniveling nose or the onset of a cold, this steaming drink of hot water, whiskey, honey, spices and lemon is surely the perfect way to finish a days heli skiing. The vitamin C is for the health, the honey there to sooth, and the alcohol to numb. If making this at home, go easy on the cloves, and use a light, flavored honey as not to end up tasting like a cough mixture. Drink whilst still hot for maximum satisfaction.
French 75
Something more refined here, the French 75 is the epitome of a classic, champagne cocktails. Sophisticated and refined, the French 75 is said to have been concocted at Harry’s New York Bar in Paris in 1915. Drinking this apparently gives the same feeling as being shelled by the powerful French 75mm howitzer artillery piece – hence the drinks name. A combination of Gin (or some believe Cognac), Champagne and lemon juice, this is one we’ll be enjoying with caution!
The Snowball
Synonymous for it’s reappearance every time Christmas comes around, we felt we couldn’t leave this one off the list. To make the classic Snowball, take one cocktail shaker and add plenty of ice. Pour in two measures of Advocaat, some lemonade and a squeeze of limejuice. Strain and serve with extra ice if desired. For a more fancy version of this classic winter special mix Grey Goose Vodka, Kahlua and heavy cream in a shaker, then strain over crushed ice and finish with a scoop of foamed milk. Garnish with a fresh cinnamon stick.
Chartreus
Chartreus, a mysterious herbal Alpine liqueur, has its origins in France. The liqueur is believed to have been created by Carthusian monks, of whom only three are rumored to hold the secret to the recipe, and have all taken a vow of silence. We like recommend substituting it for rum in a classic mojito recipe, deliciously interesting.
Irish Coffee
Here is another perfect hot drink to warm you up after an epic days heli skiing BC. Irish Coffee consists of a sweetened black coffee, whiskey, and a floating layer of cream on the top. Drank through the layer of cold cream the result is immensely satisfying. Its origins are said to be traced back to Shannon Airport in Ireland, but has since become famous the world over as a great after dinner drink, or in our case après beverage. If whiskey’s not you tipple then try the same with brandy, Malibu or Kahlua as a sweeter alternative.
